The U.S. Department of Education held a special screening and discussion of Finding Cleveland for Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. Those in attendance included U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education, Mitchell Zais. Our director, Larissa Lam, was there in person in Washington, DC while our producer, Baldwin Chiu, video conferenced in to join the discussion moderated by Dr. Taharee Jackson. The event was also simulcast to other regional branches of the Dept. of Education.

Our producer, Baldwin Chiu, screened Finding Cleveland at the Golden Spike Conference in Utah held in conjunction with the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. At the conference, Baldwin received an award from the Chinese Railroad Workers Descendants Association for “Outstanding Achievement” in preserving, protecting and promoting the legacy of Chinese Railroad Workers and their descendants through the arts.

Baldwin Chiu and Larissa Lam were guests on a recent episode of Alhambra Source’s Podcast discussing the history of the Mississippi Delta Chinese and the impact of the Chinese Exclusion Act on Baldwin’s family. Take a listen here.

Baldwin Chiu and Larissa Lam launched a new podcast that will serve as a platform for further discussions on many of the topics they cover when they have been presenting Finding Cleveland. They talk about other seldom discussed stories in U.S. History, Asian American identity, representation in entertainment, family and Baldwin’s favorite food, dim sum. Listen to the episodes here. You can also subscribe on Apple Podcasts, TuneIn and various podcast apps.

Baldwin was asked to contribute photos of family objects and the stories behind them for a special online exhibit, “50 Objects” curated by the 1882 Foundation for the Tenement Museum in NY’s “Your Story, Our Story” ongoing exhibit.  “Your Story, Our Story” features “objects that tell personal stories of American immigration and migration.” We chose one object that features prominently in our film as well as another item that has not been shown until now.

You can check out our two family artifacts and read about their stories here:

NPR recently did a feature spotlighting the Mississippi Delta Chinese and we are so glad to see friends of ours like Frieda Quon and Gilroy Chow interviewed for this piece. Frieda and Gilroy will be appearing in our new full-length documentary and have been helpful resources to us as we learn more about the Chinese community in the Delta.

Listen and/or read the piece here.

The Cleveland Current found our film and did a wonderful article on it. You can read it here .
